What is the BA Accelerator Plan (CBE)?

Competency based education is an innovative and exciting way to study online and earn a degree at your own pace. Instead of following the traditional online format of designated fifteen-week semesters, weekly assignments, and set deadlines, competency-based education gives you the freedom to demonstrate your  competency and  knowledge and follow a smart learning schedule that fits your life

Unlike other self-paced courses or competency exams which can leave you floundering on your own, CBE courses include regular instructor feedback and interaction, giving you full support along the way.

Benefits of the BA Accelerator Plan?

What are the benefits of competency-based education (CBE)?

Own Pace & Supportive

CBE courses allow students to set their own pace but also include academic and student support, and regular interaction with an instructor.

Structured Assignments

Courses are broken down into competencies. Completed assignments demonstrate a student’s knowledge and mastery.

Knowledge Building

The competencies build on each other, so that by the time a student is ready for a final assessment, they can feel confident that they have gained the skills and knowledge to succeed.

Competency Based

Students with significant background knowledge can prove their competency quickly, while students with less knowledge can take more time.

Quality Resources & Material

Detailed rubrics, assignment templates, and robust resources give students the guidance and structure needed to succeed.

Guidance & Feedback

Regular instructor feedback and the ability to correct and resubmit assignments help ensure students master the subject material.

Frequently Asked Questions - FAQs

How is CBE different from the traditional (online) education?

Traditional online education runs in a set semester format with inflexible assignment deadlines and required weekly assignments. Credit by exam or direct assessment programs provide learning resources but expect students to study on their own. CBE is an innovative program in that it incorporates instructor feedback and support, student services, and incremental assignments from traditional online courses, with the self-paced aspect of direct assessment. This enables students to have ‘the best of both worlds’ – a course that builds knowledge organically, progressing from simpler to more complex assignments, includes regular instructor interaction, and provides student support, with the ability to set their own pace.

What courses are currently available in the CBE track?

The Judaic Studies Bachelor of Arts will offer all Major courses as CBE courses starting in the Fall 2021 Semester. These include both Tanach and Talmud tracks. Each track includes up to 33 credits offered as CBE. The Tanach track includes courses in Chumash, Neviim Rishonim, Neviim Acharonim, Hashkafa, Halacha and Moadim, the Talmud track includes courses in Gemara Iyun, Gemara Bekius, and Halacha.

How many credits can be earned as CBE? What is recommended?

Students who choose the CBE track will take all of the courses offered for the major in CBE format. Since courses are self-paced, students will automatically be enrolled in all CBE courses and can then decide when to begin each course.

How fast can one complete and earn the CBE credits?

Since each course incorporates between 9 and 15 competencies and reflects a fifteen week course, students should calculate a sufficient amount of time to complete the coursework. Initially students are allotted up to 12 weeks to complete a course with the option to extend for an additional eight weeks. However, a motivated student with time to focus on the coursework and sufficient background knowledge can finish a CBE course within four weeks. An exceptionally advanced student can even finish a CBE course in one week of intense work.

Who is going to benefit most from CBE?

Students with a strong Judaic Studies background who want to accelerate their BA studies or want to set their own pace would be the right match for these courses. If you want to enter a graduate program quickly or are studying in yeshiva and want to compress your studies into vacation times; or you have a busy schedule and need flexibility, so that you can complete assignments when you have time, then CBE may be for you.

How much does it cost?

CBE courses are the same price as traditional courses, $300 per credit, with equal access to our various scholarships – need-based, academic, Jewish educator, etc.
